New materials and sustainability

  • Tannigel: Water-absorbent hydrogel for agricultural use
What is it?TanniGel is a powdered product that mixes with the soil and helps to keep moisture for longer. It is made based on pulp byproducts and other components found in everyday products such as oranges or wine. Its biopolymer composition allows it to generate a hydrogel with high water retention capacity and is biodegradable, unlike other products on the market.
InventorDr. Bruno Urbano, Faculty of Chemical Sciences

  • Aulox: Automatic dissolved oxygen titrator
What is it?The dissolved oxygen variable is key in different areas, such as oceanography and limnology, and even generates interest at an industrial level. This equipment allows chemical titration, through the definition of the “Winkler Method,” to determine the dissolved oxygen of a water sample.

Human and animal health

  • Portable and adaptable system for monitoring worker’s breathing
What is it?The technology is a monitoring system that can be attached to respirators to monitor a worker’s breathing while performing their tasks without intervening in them. It comprises sensors that perform real-time measurements of the user’s breathing and the remaining useful life of the industrial respirator filters. It can be used with any industrial respirator.

  • Probiotic formulation for the treatment of dysbiosis in companion pets
What is it?Developed by researchers from Veterinary and Biological Sciences, the product is a powdered formula added to the pet’s usual food to improve nutrient absorption, digestion, and intestinal transit. The technology was licensed in Chile to the biotechnology company Liva Company, which markets it under the brand Pet Babies. It is the first probiotic for animals made 100% in Chile.

  • Device that allows treating sleep bruxism using electrical signals
What is it?The device consists of a discharge splint (relaxation plate) with an electronic neurostimulator embedded in the front part. It allows the masticatory muscles to relax when the patient is asleep and grinding their teeth. It includes the interdental pressure measurement integrated into a splint (already tested and validated in patients) with an electronic neurostimulator (devices used in multiple rehabilitation areas).

Society

  • Protocol of action for attention in justice with a gender and diversity approach
What is it?This instrument’s primary purpose is to provide recommendations on including the gender perspective in the actions of the Chilean Judiciary (PJUD) to promote respect, compliance, and access to justice for all people. Its emphasis is on user attention and how institution members treat one another.

Food industry

  • Biodegradable packaging for food transport
What is it?This is the process of obtaining highly transparent flat sheets based on a composite material incorporating polylactic acid (PLA) to form thermoformed elements with mechanical and thermal resistance. This results in a biodegradable composite material that is transparent like virgin PET and superior to recycled PET, with excellent tensile strength and greater resistance to bending than PET.

  • Strain to improve the productivity of astaxanthin
What is it?Astaxanthin is a food coloring and supplement with a growing global demand driven by its increasing use in different industries, including animal feed, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food, and beverages. The UdeC technology is a polyploid strain of Haematococcus pluvialis, which has a cell volume 60% higher than the base strain of H. plivialis and is capable of producing 30 to 40% more astaxanthin by dry weight compared to the base strain.

Education

  • SIPLYC – Interactive System for Language Promotion and Communication
What is it?SIPLYC is a mobile application for tablets with an Android system. Its game format is aimed at stimulating children’s language and communication. It allows for recognizing and vocalizing uncommon words and letter sounds and develops contingent responses. At the end of each session, SIPLYC generates a report of what has been learned to date for parents and educators.
